Am I the only one who sees lines as weird little daily tests?

I was stuck in a huge line at the post office today, and this guy in front of me was practically vibrating with stress, checking his watch every ten seconds. But the lady behind me was just humming, totally peaceful. It made me think, is a long wait just stolen time, or is it a free minute to finally just stop and breathe? What side are you on?

Faced a brutal grocery line once that snaked into the frozen foods. I decided to just look at what people had in their carts instead of checking the clock. That lady has three kinds of pickles, interesting. It turned a frustrating wait into a weird little game. Now I try to find one odd or nice thing to notice when I'm stuck waiting. It makes the time feel like a small break instead of a waste.

But what if noticing weird stuff just makes you more aware of how long you're stuck there? Sometimes staring at the clock is less annoying.

When you say noticing stuff makes you more aware of the wait, I get that. But picking one specific thing to focus on actually pulls your brain away from the time. In a long line, I might count how many people are wearing blue or something equally simple. It becomes a dumb little game that kills time without making you clock-watch. Staring at the clock just feeds the frustration because you're tracking every slow second. Giving your mind a cheap puzzle to solve is way better than just standing there annoyed.
