Got a request to retrofit an old Otis unit from 1962 last week

The owner wants modern safety sensors but wants to keep the original brass fixtures and hand-cranked gate operation, has anyone else had to deal with mixing 60-year-old parts with new code requirements?

@blair_davis50 almost had it right, but WD-40 is more for stuck bolts than code compliance. The real headache is finding UL-listed sensors that play nice with the original hand crank mechanism without triggering failsafes every five seconds. Have you looked into retrofitting the gate interlock with magnetic switches that look period appropriate?

Did you try offering it a little WD-40 and a stern talking to first?
