The shop's lead tech insisted on using a 40-watt iron for every SMD rework, but I watched it lift three pads on a Pixel 6 board before I grabbed my Hakko FX-951 set to 320.
Has anyone else had to push back against a 'one tool for everything' policy that was actively damaging client devices?

That's a tough spot to be in. Watching pads lift because of the wrong tool is so frustrating. You definitely did the right thing stepping in.

Actually sometimes you gotta let people learn from their own mistakes. I saw a guy at our shop last year use the wrong pry bar on a caliper bracket and he never did it again after he saw the damage. Stepping in every time just creates techs who can't problem solve on their own. A little bit of frustration now can save a bigger mistake later.
