Found a cheap way to seal basement windows last winter that actually held

Picked up some closed-cell foam backer rod from Home Depot for $12 and shoved it in the gaps around my old basement windows before the -30 snap. Has anyone else tried this instead of the expensive spray foam kits?

You mentioned the backer rod, and that stuff works great for big gaps. But I gotta point out that just shoving it in there without some sealant on top won't keep the water out. The backer rod is mostly for taking up space so you can put caulk or foam over it. Did you put anything over the rod or just leave it exposed?

Yeah I mean, water's gonna find a way in either way.
