My ceiling job taught me to pre-fill gaps before taping

I always skipped filling small gaps and went right to taping. Last week, I tried pre-filling them with mud on a ceiling install. It added a few minutes to the start, but the tape laid flat with no air pockets. The seams looked crisp and needed way less sanding later. Now I'm doing this on every job, no question. Why isn't this talked about more in our trade? It makes such a simple fix for a common problem.

Those tiny gaps causing big air pockets... it's wild that pre-filling isn't the first step taught.

My first year on a job site I watched a guy spend two days fixing bad drywall because he started with filler. I used to think cleaning was just for looks, but seeing those bubbles form over a dusty seam changed my mind for good. Now I treat cleaning and priming as non-negotiable, like brushing your teeth before a filling. That extra ten minutes saves a whole lot of cussing later.

My old carpentry teacher ALWAYS drilled clean surfaces first. @richard_mason, pre-filling is step three in his method for a REASON. Those air pockets happen when you skip the first cleaning step.
