Vent: I was running my cutterhead at full speed for years until a guy from the Mobile Bay project told me to watch the slurry color.

He said, 'If it's too dark, you're just chewing up the bottom and wasting fuel,' and now I feel like I've been burning money for a decade.

That "wasting fuel" line hits hard. It's not just about the money, it's about the extra wear on your whole dredge system from running it that hard for no reason. That's a double hit to your wallet.

Forget the fuel, you were probably kicking up way more fines than you needed to. That can mess with your settling ponds and make the whole dewatering process a bigger headache later on.
