Hot take: Old timer told me to slow down my swing speed and I fought it for weeks

I was running a 14-inch cutterhead on a job in Mobile Bay and kept snapping teeth left and right. This guy with 30 years came by and said I was swinging too fast, that I needed to let the material tell me the pace. Took me three days to actually listen and drop from 12 RPM to about 8. Now I'm wondering if there's a sweet spot for different mud types or if it's just a feel thing. Anyone else had to unlearn a habit after someone called them out on site?

Richard_roberts80 nailed it on the mud type thing. Used to think faster was always better until I slowed down on some heavy clay and actually got better bite. Really changed my outlook on letting the ground set the pace instead of forcing it.

Thick clay is slower. Sand lets you crank it up some.
