Figured out I was holding my pencil wrong after 12 years of drafting

Ngl I've been drafting for over a decade and always thought my hand cramping was just part of the job. Last month I took a weekend class at a community college in Austin and the instructor took one look at my hand and said 'you're gripping that like a hammer.' She showed me this relaxed tripod grip and now I can sketch for 3 hours without stopping. Made me wonder how many other little habits I've been doing wrong this whole time. Has anyone else had a basic technique change that made a huge difference in their work?

Went and looked up that tripod grip thing you mentioned and realized I've been holding my pencil between my index and middle finger like some kind of weirdo for 20 years. Does switching to the correct grip feel super awkward at first like you're learning to write all over again, or does it click pretty fast once you get the finger placement right? I'm wondering if the muscle memory from all those years of wrong grip makes it extra hard to unlearn.

Wait, you were holding it between your index and middle finger this whole time?
