Warning: Don't trust those $20 patch kits for drywall holes

I spent last Sunday fixing a fist-sized hole in my hallway from a doorknob slam. Bought one of those super cheap mesh patch kits at Home Depot for $19.99, figured it was a steal. Followed the directions exactly, let it dry 24 hours, sanded it smooth, painted over it. Two days later the crack showed up AGAIN through the paint. The mesh was too flimsy and the compound shrank like crazy. Anyone else have luck with the fiberglass mesh tape instead of those pre-cut patch squares?
