Spent 3 hours patching drywall with mesh tape before a neighbor showed me the paper stuff

I was fixing a big hole in my living room wall from a doorknob incident. Used mesh tape and joint compound for the first time, and it took forever to get smooth. My neighbor Bob came over for a beer and saw me sanding, said paper tape is way easier for flat patches. Tried his method on a second hole and the finish was perfect in half the time. Anyone else have a go-to tape for different drywall repairs?

...and that's exactly how I learned the hard way too. My first patch job with mesh tape looked like a weird textured pancake when I was done. Paper tape does make flat patches way easier but I swear by mesh for corners and tricky spots. The key is using the right tape for the job not just what's on sale. What about those big patches with holes over a foot wide?

Forget the mesh vs paper debate for a sec... have you tried using a backer board like cement board for those big holes? It gives you a solid surface to screw into and keeps the patch from flexing and cracking later.
