That artist who told me to stop using soft brushes was totally right.
I spent like 6 months doing portraits that looked muddy and blurry, then a guy on a stream said "hard edges or go home" and my last 3 pieces actually popped. Has anyone else had a random comment just click like that?

Hard edges or go home" is such a perfect way to put it. I actually had a buddy who went through the same thing, he was doing these soft airbrush portraits that just looked like smudgy clouds. He spent months on one piece and finally posted it, and some random person just commented "your shadows are bleeding into the light areas, pick a hard brush and lay down a clean shape." He got so mad at first but tried it anyway and it completely flipped his work around. His next couple portraits had that crisp pop to them, you could actually see the form of the face instead of just a blur. It's wild how one little comment can change your whole approach when you're stuck.
