PSA: That conversation with my old instructor finally clicked after 5 years
Was talking to my diesel instructor from tech school last week about a truck that kept losing power uphill. He said I was probably chasing sensors when the real problem was rail pressure dropping from a worn pump. I always thought he was just old school and out of date but the guy was right, I found a cracked plunger in the CP3. Has anyone else had a past teacher or mentor say something that nagged at you for years before it finally made sense?

That cracked plunger thing is exactly the kind of problem that drives you nuts. I had a similar situation where my old welding instructor kept saying "check your ground before you check your machine" and I dismissed it for years. Turns out a dirty ground clamp was causing all my arc blow issues on thick plate, not the welder settings. Sometimes the simplest mechanical stuff gets overlooked when you're used to chasing electronic gremlins.

Wondering if that instructor ever said anything else that stuck with you even when you thought he was wrong? I had a similar thing with my old math teacher who kept saying "slow down to speed up" and I rolled my eyes for years until I realized rushing through diagnostics was actually costing me more time than just being methodical from the start. Did he have any other pieces of advice that seemed outdated but turned out to be spot on once you had enough experience to understand what he really meant?
