Big debate on my home router: default firmware vs OpenWRT
I switched my old Netgear R7000 from stock firmware to OpenWRT about two weeks ago because the default software kept dropping connections on my Xbox. It's been stable so far and I got better control over QoS settings, but I miss the simple app for changing settings from my phone. Anyone else try OpenWRT and stick with it or end up going back to the factory firmware?

Good to hear your R7000 is finally stable, that's a relief.

Oh man, I feel your pain on the app thing - I literally almost bricked my router the first week because I was so used to that simple phone app and accidentally changed a setting I had NO business touching through the web interface. But yeah, once I got OpenWRT dialed in I couldn't imagine going back to stock, even if it means I have to actually use a computer like a caveman to adjust things. The stability difference is night and day, especially when my wife is streaming stuff on her tablet while I'm trying to game, the old firmware would just give up and drop everything. I still miss that stupid app though, my fat fingers on a 6 inch screen where everything is laid out nice is way easier than squinting at a browser on my phone.
