Hit a dead link on a museum archive from 2004

I was digging through old university servers at U of Michigan last night and a link swore it led to a Flash-based dinosaur game. Instead it redirected to a page full of garbled HTML and a popup that crashed my browser... has anyone else run into preserved sites that just break your setup like that?

Yeah the RealPlayer plugin was a nightmare even back then.

Well actually the issue isn't just the dead link itself, a lot of those old museum sites used proprietary plugins like Shockwave or RealPlayer that modern browsers just don't support anymore. The garbled HTML and popup crash probably came from a script trying to load one of those outdated players and failing hard. You might have better luck if you try using an old version of Firefox or Internet Explorer through a virtual machine, that's how I got a 1999 NASA site to load properly last month.
