Spent 4 hours trying to fix a single character's motivation in my fantasy novel
I kept rewriting the same scene over and over for three days before I realized the problem wasn't the dialogue but that she hated her brother for a reason I hadn't even written yet, has anyone else gotten stuck on a character's backstory that took way longer to figure out than the actual plot?

Wait - did that realization hit you all at once or did it creep up over those three days? I'm genuinely curious because I've had both happen and they feel completely different. When it hits sudden like a lightning bolt, that's almost more frustrating because you feel stupid for not seeing it sooner. But when it crawls in slow, you end up torturing yourself wondering if you could have caught it earlier if you'd just paid attention. Which one was this?
