I used to plan every single plot point before writing a word

Back in 2018 I was the queen of outlines. I would spend weeks mapping out every chapter beat, character arc, and plot twist before typing a single sentence. Then I realized my stories felt stiff and lifeless, like I was just checking boxes instead of letting things happen naturally. Now I start with a vague idea like 'two strangers get stuck in an elevator' and just write whatever comes out. The weirdest part is that my endings turned out way more surprising when I didn't plan them ahead of time. I think I was trying too hard to control everything because I was scared of writing myself into a corner. Has anyone else ditched the outline and seen their writing actually improve?

Is a little structure really that bad if it keeps your story from falling apart halfway through?

Hear me out but I think you might be missing something here. A little structure is totally fine, it's like having a map so you don't get lost in the woods. But there's a big difference between a full outline and just knowing your next couple of scenes. I used to do the whole chapter-by-chapter thing too and my stories felt like they were running on rails, you know? Now I just jot down a few key moments I want to hit and let everything else fill in as I go. That way I still have a safety net without strangling the story's natural flow. Ending up with surprises feels way more fun than having everything figured out months in advance.
