That safety guy from the union hall was right about my rigging
Back in March I got a job out near the port in Norfolk and figured I could save time using my own spreader bar instead of the one the site had. A guy from the union hall, Mike, told me my shackle setup was undersized for the rated load and I blew him off because I'd run that same rig for two years without a problem. Well, last month I had a 14 ton HVAC unit swinging and the shackle pin started to bind, just a slight pop but enough to make me drop the load about 3 feet onto a concrete pad. Nobody got hurt, but the unit was toast and the boss charged me $2,800 for the repair, plus they banned my spreader bar from the yard. Mike was nice enough about it, just said "the math doesn't care about your streak" and now I double check every load chart even if it feels like overkill. Has anyone else had a close call that only happened because you trusted old habits over the paperwork?
