Why I switched from box dye to doing my own color melt
I used to think box color was just as good as anything I could mix myself... cheaper too, obviously. But after doing a client's hair last month with a proper color melt, I compared it side by side with my own grown out box job and the difference was honestly embarrassing. The box color sat flat and looked muddy around my roots, while the melt had this soft, blended transition that moved when she turned her head. What really convinced me was watching how the developer worked, box dye uses a one size fits all strength and it cooked my ends while my roots stayed stubborn. Now I spend 20 minutes measuring mixing ratios and it takes maybe twice as long, but I don't have to redo my hair every 4 weeks to hide the line. Has anyone else here ditched store bought dye after learning to mix their own? I'm curious what formulas you all swear by for fine hair.
Switching to measured ratios changed my whole approach too, and once you get comfy with it you can tweak the developer for just your roots instead of frying everything to match. For fine hair I'd start lower on the volume and go a touch darker at the root, then gloss the ends so it doesn't grab too much. It sounds like you already figured out the biggest thing, which is that box dye can't adapt to your hair the way you can.
