Appreciation post: A stylist in Phoenix showed me why I was wrong about using a 1-inch curling iron on fine hair.

After seeing too many clients with limp, droopy curls that fell out in an hour, I realized that tool creates too much heat and weight for the hair type, so now I start with a 3/4-inch barrel for a much better hold that actually lasts the day.

That "too much heat and weight" thing is everywhere, like using a huge drill for a tiny cavity.

My stylist in Denver made the same switch, and @schmidt.casey's drill comparison really hits home.

Saw a whole article about this in a salon magazine last week. They called it "over-tooling" and said it's a huge problem right now. Basically said stylists are burning through expensive gear and frying hair because the power is just too much for everyday work. It made me look at my own flat iron totally differently.
