The old webcam site from 2004 that still runs on a Pentium in Ohio
I was digging through link inventories last Tuesday and found a live traffic cam page for a rest stop off I-80 near Youngstown, Ohio. It's been streaming since 2004 with zero updates, just a grainy JPEG refresh every 30 seconds. That thing outlasted three major social networks and still works on my mom's dial-up. Anyone else got a forgotten site that's basically a time capsule running on pure stubbornness?
The one that got me was a little diner cam in Grand Rapids that ran from 2001 to 2019 before the owner finally unplugged it. Same deal, one grainy shot every minute, and you could watch the regulars shuffle in for coffee every single morning. What worked for me was saving the whole page with the Wayback Machine and grabbing a few screenshots on different days, because when these things finally die they just vanish with no warning. I checked that Youngstown cam out of curiosity and it's still chugging along, which honestly blows my mind. Sites like that stick around mostly because nobody bothers to turn them off, and there's something kind of nice about that.
