The dial-up BBS I dialed into last month still has a 1997 Star Trek RPG running
I bought a USB modem for $12 at a thrift store in Tucson just to see if I could even get online with it. Last Tuesday I found a local BBS that's been up since 1996, and it still has a multiplayer Star Trek text game with 4 active players. I spent 3 hours playing as a lowly ensign and got demoted for accidentally jettisoning the cargo bay. The sysop emailed me a welcome letter that reads like it was written on a typewriter, and it's the most charming thing I've seen in a decade. Do any of you still dial into old BBS systems, or am I the only one who misses the screeching modem sounds?

Did you ever think you'd get that rush again from hearing a modem handshake? I totally get why that welcome letter hit you so hard, because there's something about a real person typing out a greeting on an old system that just feels warmer than any app notification. I messed around with a local BBS a few years back and found a text based fantasy game that maybe three people still played, and I got way too into it for a couple weeks. It's sad in a way, knowing these little worlds are still running with just a handful of folks keeping them alive. You're not the only one who misses that screech, I still hear it in my head sometimes when I'm waiting on a slow page to load. How did the other players react when you blew up the cargo bay, did they give you a hard time or did they just laugh it off?
