TIL my line of sight on the grade laser was the whole problem for 8 months
We were doing a 400 ft drainage run on a site in Tucson last spring and I had the receiver reading good numbers every time, so I figured the laser was just drifting in the heat. A guy from the rental shop came out and asked why my rod was leaning back about 10 degrees at the top, and once I squared it up my numbers dropped almost 0.2 ft from where I had been digging. Turns out I had been eyeballing the rod level for months instead of watching the bubble, because holding it that way felt more steady in the wind. I ended up re-shooting 300 ft of trench that was already backfilled, and it cost us a full day. How does everyone else keep the rod plumb on long runs without a second guy spotting for you?
