The $8 drawing app on my phone beat the $600 total station for a fence job
Last summer a homeowner in Loveland wanted a privacy fence run around a yard with two big oak trees and a weird jog in the property line. I used to haul out the total station and burn a whole half day setting points, then another hour punching numbers into a spreadsheet back at the truck. This time I just pulled up a $8 sketch app on my phone, walked the line with my boots on the ground, and marked the corners with spray paint while the app did the math. Set the posts the next morning and the whole run was within an inch of the drawing. My helper just stood there laughing because we finished before lunch. The app can't do a true elevation shot on a slope though, so I still drag out the level for anything steeper than a gentle grade. Anyone got a cheap way to handle vertical that doesn't mean learning a whole new software?
