TIL changing a car cabin air filter should take 5 minutes, not 3 days

I bought a 2012 Hyundai Elantra back in March and the AC smelled like a dead mouse every time I turned it on. Looked up a video, guy said pop the glovebox, slide the filter out, easy. Took me 45 minutes just to get the glovebox off because of some hidden clip that was wedged behind the dash. Then the new filter wouldn't fit because I bought the wrong size, so I drove to AutoZone in Austin and got the right one, only to find the old filter was so packed with leaves and debris that the housing was warped. I spent another two hours trimming the plastic frame with a utility knife so the new one would seat properly. Total time was about 3 days including the trip and the cussing. My question is, why do manufacturers hide something that needs changing every year behind a puzzle box? Has anyone else had a 'simple' car part turn into a weekend project?

The filter isnt supposed to be a yearly thing on every car, its more like every 15 to 30 thousand miles depending on where you drive. But youve got a point about the design being stupid. Hyundai is known for that glovebox clip, its like they put it there just to mess with people. Actually, the real trick is you dont always need to pull the whole glovebox off, some models let you just squeeze the sides and drop it down. You probably watched the wrong video or missed that step. Next time, search for your exact year and trim level, not just the make and model. Those little differences matter more than they should.
