Sat through a 3 hour city council meeting on the new 5G poles and left with more questions than answers
Went to the council meeting at the community center on Tuesday because they were voting on putting 5G poles on my street in Oak Park. Half the people there were saying the towers cause health issues and the other half were saying its just faster internet, and nobody had any actual studies to point to. How do you all figure out which side is actually right when both sides just keep yelling past each other?
Man, I've been to like four of these meetings in my town and it always goes the same way. Here's the deal: both sides show up with their minds made up, so you're never gonna settle it in that room. What actually works is going to the source documents yourself, the FCC has rules on radio frequency limits and the pole companies have to file paperwork that shows the power output of each pole. Pull that paperwork, find out what the actual signal level is at ground level, then compare it to the FCC limit, and you'll see it's usually hundreds of times below the cutoff. The health stuff people yell about mostly comes from studies on way higher levels, like cell phone held to your head or old school towers running way hotter. The faster internet side isn't wrong either but they're also not telling you the companies get paid either way, so don't trust them as your only source. Do the ten minutes of reading and you'll walk into the next meeting knowing more than most of the people yelling.
