Hot take: a 2 inch slump drop on the same mix ruined a driveway in Fresno, watch your water
I poured two driveways off the same 3500 psi truck order at a job in Fresno back in April, one at 8am and one at 1pm, and the difference in how they finished still bugs me. The morning slab came off the chute at about a 4 inch slump, troweled out clean, and the broom lines sat nice and even. By the afternoon pour the driver had added water twice because the sun was cooking the drum, and I watched the slump run to almost 6 inches before we even got it placed. That afternoon slab set slow, bled water for what felt like forever, and we got a crust on top before the middle had firmed up, so the edger kept tearing the corner. Six weeks later there is already a hairline crack running off the control joint and the surface dusts when you rub it. Same mix design, same crew, same tools, the only thing that changed was a couple gallons of water per yard and the heat. Talked to the batch plant guy and he said they see it all summer, guys chase a workable mix instead of adjusting the mix. Any of you run into this and how do you handle a driver adding water on site without getting into it with him?
