Thermal paste replacement dropped my CPU temps by 12 degrees

I repasted my old i7-4790k last week and went from 85C under load to 73C. The original paste was totally dried out after 7 years. Anyone else see that big a drop just from fresh paste?

Did I mess up my paste job because my temps barely dropped and I still need a new CPU?

Well... 12 degrees is a pretty big jump, maybe your old paste was just really that bad. But honestly, if your temps were fine before and you weren't crashing, it might not have been that serious to begin with. A few degrees here and there isn't gonna make or break your CPU unless you're pushing it to the limit.
