Swapped from replacing whole hard drives to just swapping the control boards on failed ones

At 2am last night I saved a client's 2012 Dell with a dead WD drive by swapping the board from a donor drive, instead of the USB recovery I used to do for everything, and now I'm wondering if more techs should bother with component-level repair on old drives.

Blew up three donor boards before I got one right.

Man, that reminds me of something I saw about people having crazy bad luck with those things... heard someone say the newer boards are way more finicky than the old ones.
