Overheard a retired Bell tech talk about 66 blocks, changed my whole setup

I was helping a friend in Pflugerville with a phone closet last week and this older guy, ex-Bell, walked by and said "you're punching those pairs too tight, give em slack or you'll get crosstalk in 6 months." I always tightened mine down like crazy, never thought about how the strain on the wire could shift the pairs over time. He showed me his old method with just a finger-width loop before termination, and now I'm redoing my patch panels in my shop to test it out. Has anyone else run into older techs with habits that seem backwards but actually make sense in the long run?
