My boss caught me using thermal paste like it was peanut butter and I never questioned it for 6 years
Building a PC for a customer in Mesa last Tuesday, I squeezed a fat line of paste across the whole CPU like I always do, and the guy watching over my shoulder asked why I was covering the whole chip. He pulled up a video on his phone showing a pea sized dot in the center, and my temps dropped 8 degrees on the next build. Six years of tech work and nobody ever corrected me, not even my lead who trained me. What small habit did you pick up wrong early on and keep doing way too long?
That line about nobody correcting you for six years really hit me because I read a thread once where a bunch of long time builders admitted they all learned on their own and just copied whatever the last person did. One guy said he used way too much paste for a decade because he figured more must mean better cooling. Turns out too much actually keeps the heat from moving right and can even make a mess that dries out over time. The pea sized dot works because the pressure from the cooler spreads it thin across the whole chip anyway. I saw a test where they tried a dot, a line, and a full spread, and the temps were close but the dot was the easiest to get right every time. It is kind of scary how one bad habit can ride along for years when nobody stops to check it.
