Man, I used to grab those no-name tubes all the time to save a few bucks. Then I got one that was basically dried out chalk right out of the syringe. Put it on an old CPU I was testing and temps were awful. Had to clean it all off and redo it. Never risking that again.

Read about ceramic pastes being crumbly on purpose.

Actually, that chalky paste might have been fine if it was a ceramic based thermal compound. Some of those look dry and crumbly on purpose. They don't pump out under pressure like pastes can. The issue is if it was supposed to be normal paste and came dried out.
