Firmware updates on a Friday afternoon are a trap and I'm done pretending otherwise
Pushed a BIOS update to a client's fleet at 4pm last Friday in Rochester and bricked two boards before I even got to the parking lot. If a vendor won't give you a rollback path, that update can wait until Monday, no matter what the release notes say. What's your rule for when a firmware push is actually safe?
I used to roll my eyes at the Friday rule. Back in my help desk days we pushed whatever came down the pipe and I figured people who waited were just slow. Then a switch stack took a dump at 4:45 on a Friday and I spent my whole weekend on the phone with support instead of at my kid's ball game. Now I check three things: a tested rollback, a small pilot group, and somebody on hand for a few hours after. If any of those is missing, Monday it is.
