A shop owner in Tucson told me my bench work looked like a yard sale and he was right
Six years back I was repairing laptops out of my garage and I thought I was hot stuff. Then a shop owner in Tucson let me watch him work and said flat out, "your bench looks like a yard sale, how do you find anything?" I had 40 screws sitting loose in a coffee mug and thermal paste smeared on a cardboard box. He told me he lost a customer once because he mixed up two nearly identical screws in a MacBook and stripped a standoff, cost him $200 in parts and the repair. So I went out and got a cheap magnetic tray set and a label maker. Now every job gets its own tray and I snap a photo of screw placement before I touch anything. Last year I did 300 plus repairs and I can count the lost screws on one hand. What is your setup for keeping small parts straight during a teardown?
