TIL the best way to give a recommendation is to shut up after saying it once
I run a small board game group here in Boise and for two years I kept pushing people to try Wingspan every single week, and guess what, nobody ever did. Last October I mentioned it one time to a guy named Dave, said nothing else, and he showed up three weeks later with his own copy and taught two other people. Turns out repeating a suggestion makes people dig in, like you are selling them something. Now I say it once and let it sit, and my hit rate went from almost nothing to about half. Has anyone else noticed that the harder you push a rec, the less people want it?
Why is it that the second I get excited about a game and start talking it up, I can actually watch people's eyes glaze over? I'm pretty sure I've talked at least four friends out of playing games I know they'd love, just by being too eager about it. My wife says I have a face that ruins surprises, so maybe the pushy thing is just me being me. Funny how backing off works better than any sales pitch I could dream up.
