Appreciation post: the 12th person who took my recommendation finally said something back
I keep a little note on my phone of every community rec I've passed along, mostly book clubs, a few podcast swaps, one knife sharpener in Portland. Last Tuesday I hit number 12 for the year, which sounds small until you realize I've been doing this for three years and almost nobody ever replies. This one was a neighbor named Dara who started the same birdwatching group I've been pushing since spring, and she sent a photo of a cedar waxwing with the words "you were right about the 6am thing." That was it, one photo, but it made every ignored text worth it. What's the smallest thing someone has said back to you that made a rec feel like it landed?
Funny how the small stuff is almost always what sticks. I've noticed that with pretty much everything, not just recs. If someone actually changes one little habit because of something you said, that hits harder than a big thanks ever could. A photo of a bird at 6am is proof she really did it, and proof is rare. Most of the time we just toss stuff out into the world and never find out if it landed. Your note on your phone is a smart move, keeping track of that stuff probably keeps you sane when the replies don't come.
