Serious question, has anyone else had a dive partner give you gear advice that almost got you hurt?

My old lead diver in Tampa kept telling me to use a specific brand of drysuit seals, saying they lasted twice as long. I switched to them last month for a job on a bridge piling. On the third dive, the neck seal blew at 80 feet. I had to make a fast ascent and got a mild squeeze. The company that made the seals said it was a known batch issue they recalled quietly. I'm out two days of work and pretty mad. What do you guys do to check if gear tips are still good advice?

A quiet recall on dive gear is seriously messed up.

Quiet recalls happen all the time though, right? My buddy had a car airbag part like that. They sent a letter he missed. Isn't that just how companies avoid a big fuss? They fix it if you ask, but they don't shout it from the rooftops. It's not great, but is it really that shocking anymore? How do you even keep up with gear notices?
