That $200 JavaScript bootcamp I signed up for last month was a complete waste of time
The instructor just read slides from a 2016 course and never actually showed us how to debug real code, so has anyone here had better luck with a cheap course that actually teaches you to build something useful?

Man that's rough, but you're not alone in feeling ripped off by those cheap bootcamps. I'd suggest looking at free options like freeCodeCamp or The Odin Project, they actually make you build projects and fix real errors.

That 2016 course" part hits the nail on the head, but honestly I think you still got your money's worth if you learned what not to do.
