My buddy the sysadmin just dropped a truth bomb on me about my code

I was complaining to my friend Dave who's been a sysadmin for like 15 years about my new project taking too long, and he pointed out that every beginner coder tries to build everything from scratch when they should just copy stuff that already works. He basically told me I'm wasting time by not using libraries and templates more, and now I'm wondering if I've been making things harder on myself for no reason. Has anyone else had a moment where someone experienced called out a bad habit you didn't even notice?

Wait, wait, wait. So Dave told you that you've been rewriting library code from scratch this whole time? That's wild, I would have been so embarrassed.
