Tried a 3 flute carbide on aluminum after years of using 2 flute, and the finish difference shocked me
Been running 2 flute uncoated bits on 6061 for like 8 years at the shop in Modesto. Boss grabbed a 3 flute carbide for a rush job on some brackets last month and the chip evac was night and day. I was running 4000 rpm at 30 ipm and getting chatter on deep pockets, same setup with the 3 flute let me push 55 ipm with a way cleaner floor finish. Surface finish went from needing a kiss pass to basically bolt-on ready off the machine. Only downside is the chips run hotter so I had to bump the coolant flow. What flute counts are you guys running on 6061 and does it change for 7075?
