Serious question, did a rain barrel permit in Denver really take me 4 months to figure out?
So last spring I finally got a 55 gallon rain barrel set up after wanting one for ages, and I figured the hard part would be the gutter diverter. Nope. The actual nightmare was the city paperwork, which sounds boring until you're 11 weeks deep into it. I called the water department three separate times and got three different answers about whether I needed a permit for a barrel under 110 gallons, and one guy literally told me to "check the website" while I was already looking at the website. I ended up driving to the office on 15th in person just to have someone point at a one page form I could have mailed in on day one. The whole thing took me 4 months from first phone call to the barrel actually catching water, and about 3 hours of that was the actual install. Now I'm wondering if anyone else in a city with weird rules just skipped the permit and hoped nobody noticed, or am I the only one who sat on hold for a rain barrel?
Did your buddy ever try calling the state instead of the city? My friend went through something like this in Aurora and got the runaround for weeks, then finally just mailed the form in without talking to anyone and it went through fine. Turns out the phone people were the problem, not the rules. Kind of wild that a rain barrel takes more paperwork than the gutter job itself.
