My neighbor told me to skip the city's composting program because it was a hassle.
He said it wouldn't make a real difference and was just busywork. I listened for a few months, but then saw our building's trash audit. Our floor was throwing out over 40 pounds of food waste a week. Started composting again last month and our regular trash bin is half as full. Anyone else have a neighbor or friend talk them out of a green habit that actually works?

People often forget how much their own small actions add up.

Your neighbor gave you some truly terrible advice. Forty pounds a week is a shocking amount of waste, and it's a perfect example of what @noralewis said about small actions adding up. My old roommate tried to convince me that turning off lights was pointless because the fridge was always running. Our next power bill was a real wake-up call for him. Some people just don't want to see the pile of banana peels in the room.
