My household carbon footprint hit 10 tons and I didn't see it coming
I've been tracking my household's emissions for about a year now using a simple online calculator. Figured we were doing okay with the solar panels and composting. Then I actually sat down and added up all our natural gas usage from heating and hot water. Turns out that alone put us at 10.2 tons of CO2 per year. That number really hit me because the average American household is around 48 tons, so I thought we were doing great. But then I looked closer and realized our gas furnace is 22 years old and probably leaking heat. The water heater is even older. Now I'm trying to figure out if a heat pump would actually pay off or if we should just focus on insulation first. Has anyone here swapped out an old gas system for heat pump and seen a big drop in their numbers?

Well, congrats on saving the planet with solar panels while your furnace is old enough to vote. That 10 tons is basically a participation trophy for "kinda tried, mostly failed." A heat pump will drop your numbers but only if your house isn't actively leaking heat through 22 year old insulation gaps. Plug those holes first or you're just heating the neighborhood with fancy equipment. Maybe just buy a really good sweater and call it a day.

I read that the Department of Energy says heat pumps can cut heating bills by like 50% if you seal up the house first. You mentioning those 22 year old insulation gaps hit home because my buddy just did the whole blower door test and found his attic was basically a chimney. He spent $800 on sealing and insulation, then swapped to a heat pump, and his electric bill dropped from $280 to $160 in January. But you're right, just slapping a heat pump on a leaky house is like putting a new engine in a rusted out car. That sweater idea is honestly more honest than pretending tech alone fixes everything.
