Watched a guy in Portland run a brush up the flue before the vacuum was even on and it hit me
Honestly I've been sweeping for 5 years and last Tuesday I worked a job in Portland with this older guy named Ray who's been at it for like 30 years. We walk into this old craftsman house with a brick fireplace and he starts setting up, and I notice he turns the vacuum on outside the door first and lets it run for a good 2 minutes before he even touches the flue. I always did the opposite, brush first then vacuum up the mess. He said the draft pulls the dust out instead of pushing it into the room, and sure enough when we pulled the rods out there was almost nothing on the drop cloth. I felt dumb standing there with my shop vac because my whole system was basically backwards this whole time. Now Im wondering how many living rooms I dusted over the years without even knowing it. Anybody else learn the vacuum first thing from an old timer or is that just how everyone was taught?
