TIL a 1920s flue tile in a Charlotte bungalow taught me more about draft than any modern manual

After three years of just cleaning the soot, I finally understood why that old kitchen chimney always smoked when the homeowner last week described how her grandma would only burn applewood, which burns cooler and slower, creating a steadier draft that the narrow tile could actually handle.

Reminds me of my buddy's cabin upstate. He fought a smoky fireplace for two whole seasons, bought all the gadgets. Finally some old guy at the hardware store asked him what wood he was using. He was burning pine, which just gums things up fast. Switched to well-seasoned oak and the problem just went away. Honestly, the old ways just knew how to work with what they had.

Ugh, that sounds like such a frustrating waste of time and money!
