Brush that with a plastic liner and you'll regret it

I used a steel wire brush on a client's metal flue in Portland last week and it shredded the flexible liner in under 10 minutes, cost me $400 in repairs out of pocket. The liner manufacturer's manual clearly says nylon or poly brushes only, but I always figured steel was fine since it worked on masonry. Has anyone else had a liner fail like this, or am I the only dummy who skipped the fine print?

Yeah I actually read a forum thread about this a few months back where a guy in Ohio had the exact same thing happen with a pellet stove liner. He said the steel bristles can actually catch on the corrugation and peel it back like a banana. Different brand but same plastic core material, guess it's all similar.
