Hot take: power stretcher vs knee kicker on a 40 yard run in a Tulsa rental
Last week I did a 40 yard run of cheap berber in a rental over off 21st in Tulsa, and I had both my knee kicker and my power stretcher in the truck. I started with the kicker like I always did for small jobs, and by the second bedroom my knees were barking and the carpet still wasn't snug against the wall. So I switched to the power stretcher and it was night and day. The berber locked in tight on the first pass and I didn't have to keep coming back to fix ripples. Some guys on my crew swear the kicker is faster on anything under 50 yards and the stretcher is overkill. But I think that only works if the carpet has some give and the tack strip is fresh. On this cheap berber over concrete, the kicker just couldn't get the stretch I needed. I finished the whole place in about 3 hours with the stretcher versus the 5 it would have taken me kicking it. What do you all do on smaller rental jobs, do you still drag the stretcher in or do you just kick it and move on?
