Hit 1,000 square feet in one day for the first time last Friday

Been laying carpet for about 6 years now and never pushed past 850 feet in a full day, but last Friday I did a 12 by 12 living room plus a 20 foot hallway in a ranch house off Route 26, all by myself with just a knee kicker and a power stretcher. I finished at 4pm and counted the waste, ended up using 1,020 square feet of a 12 foot roll and still had time to fix a seam I messed up on the first try. Anyone else hit a number like that and realize their pace was starting to change, or was it just a lucky layout?

That 1,020 square feet number jumps out at me more than the time you finished. Most guys I know count their day by what they pulled off the roll, not what they actually laid down. If you only used 20 feet of waste on a job that size, that's the real story here. I mean, my waste usually runs closer to 8 or 9 percent on a good day, and you're sitting at like 2 percent. That tells me you're not just moving faster, you're reading the room better before you even cut the first piece. Maybe it's just me, but I've noticed my pace jumps a lot more when I stop re-measuring stuff and just trust my eye from the first layout. That hallway with the 12 foot roll probably lined up perfect with no seams, which is a gift, but you still had to make that call on where to start. So yeah, lucky layout helps, but that waste number says your brain is getting quicker too.
