Why does everyone over-caulk baseboards?

I was at a job last week fixing trim in a house from the 70s and every single baseboard had a thick bead of caulk that was cracking and yellowed. Why do people think more caulk = better, when a thin smooth bead is all you need and lasts way longer? Anyone else run into this on their jobs?

Feel your pain dude. Nothing worse than scraping off crusty old caulk.

Ugh @lee.cole, tell me about it. I just spent like an hour with a putty knife and a heat gun going after some old silicone in my bathroom and it was a total nightmare. The stuff was so crusty it just flaked off in little pieces but wouldn't come off in one strip.
