PSA: Stop trusting the laser level for door jambs

I spent 6 hours last Tuesday shimming a bathroom door in a Reno house and the laser said it was dead plumb, but the gap was a mess top to bottom. Then I grabbed my 4-foot torpedo level and found the laser was off by nearly a quarter inch because the base was sitting on a dusty floor plate. Why does everyone treat these things like gospel when a $30 stick level still catches what the batteries miss?

Wait, so the laser was telling you the truth the whole time and the dust was just running the show? That's rich. I swear these things are like a fancy mood ring, they look great on the shelf but fall apart the second real life shows up. I've learned to treat any laser reading like a suggestion, not a fact. Maybe the next model will come with a built-in dust detector and a little "check your floor, dummy" alarm. Mine just blinks at me and lets me look stupid for six hours.
