A customer taught me to stop sanding everything to glass

Last fall I was finishing a set of oak shelves for a house in Spokane and I kept sanding them up to 220 grit, taking forever. The homeowner walked in and asked why the wood looked so flat and lifeless. She said she wanted to feel the grain, not touch plastic. I went back to 120 grit on the next batch and the difference was night and day. Has anyone else had a client push them toward a rougher finish and did it change your standard process?
